Notes	Anne was the first daughter and second of five children of Thomas Dudley. "From her seventh to fifteenth year she lived at Sempringham, Lincolnshire, where her father was steward in charge of the vast estates of Theophilus Clinton, the young Earl of Lincoln. Anne’s early training was determined by her father’s high position and wealth and by the nonconformist doctrine and practice which governed his household. She had private tutors, the cultured surroundings of life in Tattershall Castle and most important for her, the intellectual stimulus of the Earl’s library." Citing Notable American Women, p. 222. At the time of her marriage she was already writing poetry which would make her "the first significant woman poet of England and the first American poetess."
