- He emigrated to the US from Barile, Italy, in about 1893 (note that there is an organization of individuals of Albanian descent living in Italy - this matches the family history of the Troppolis! And the town of Barile in Brasilicata (cap: Potenza), Italy, is listed as an “Arberesh” town). Three of his children were born before he left Italy (Rafaela on 3/15/1888, Joe about 18 months later, and the first Frank about 16 months before Pasquale left for America). (Basile is at the top of the heel in the boot.)
Pasquale worked in a mill in Lawrence, MA, and owned a home there when his wife came over 4 or 5 years later (Joe's birthdate is incorrect on US papers). The order of the children is correct, though where marked by "abt" the birth year are merely guesses.
Catarina, Raph and Joe arrived in RI in Sept and then went on to Lawrence, MA. About a year later, the family moved to RI, Providence, where Pasquale worked for Gamino Construction (the family stayed with Gamino on Spruce Street for a few weeks). Pasquale did stone work in Fall River (including a bridge that once spanned the Barrington River, replaced about 1997).
Catarina's first child born in America was a girl, born still-born. The second was Frank (father of Dottie, who provided much of this information).
Pasquale bought two houses on Dale Street (a 6 family and a 2 family behind it). Raphaela lived on the first floor in 1909. In 1914, Rafaela and her husband Joe bought 57 Courtland Street. Catarina lived on the first floor.
In 1920, Pasquale and his family lived at 57 Courtland with his married daughter. At the time, he was working as a helper in a machine shop. Nearby lived familes named Paolino, Picozzi, DiFusco and Damato.
In 1922, they bought property on Broad Street (prob. she meant Broadway) in the Federal Hill neighborhood and the family moved there (Daniel Troppoli's medical office was on the first floor of the building for years.)
The 1930 Federal Census for Ward 9, Providence, Providence Co., RI, shows that Pasquale owned a home at 380 Broadway valued at $18,000 -- his wife and 5 sons are all listed as part of the family. All are listed as literate with all able to speak English -- note that Pasquale, Catarine and Joe are all listed as born in Italy (the rest as born in Rhode Island). [1, 7, 8, 9]
