Notes	William was the illegitimate son of Robert of Normandy and Arlette of Conteville. In 1051, William Duke of Normandy visited Edward the Confessor, son of Aehtlered II (and a descendant of Alfred the Great). Edward promised William that when Edward died, William would become King of all England. Instead, in the year 1066 when Edward died, Harold Godwineson, Edward’s brother-in-law, took the throne, although he had promised to support William’s claim. William invaded England. famous
