- He spent much of his early life on the Continent, especially in Germany. He served in the Imperial Hungarian Army against the Turks. He was created by Rudolph II, Emperor of Germany, a Count of the Holy Roman Empire. The patent and creation, dated Prague, 14 Dec. 1595, conferred the honor upon you Thomas and all and every one of your children, heirs, and descendants of both sexes already born or that hereafter shall be. In other words, the title was conferred upon all of his descendants.
Eventually he returned to England, found favor with the Tudors and elevated to the peerage as 1st Baron Arundel of Wardour.
